Safety comes first! This applies to all new places you go to as well as places you've been before. It is precisely in the places that you know well that you can become a little more lax in paying attention to your surroundings. What about security on Curaçao? You don't have to feel unsafe in Curaçao, but just like in other countries it can happen that you have to deal with crime. Unfortunately, crime cannot be prevented, but there are a few steps you can take to limit the chances.
To protect valuables against theft, it is important that you do not continuously show them in public. Taking photos’s and video’s of the beautiful island is of course always possible, but holding your phone in your hand while walking along a road is less convenient. Also, don't leave wallets or phones on a table on the terrace, this can be seen as an 'invitation'.
Curaçao is not known for good foot and bicycle paths, so for your own safety it is useful to travel with another person means of transport to go. In addition, it is not wise to walk somewhere alone at night. Also check in advance which neighborhood / environment you are in. Often you can see for yourself whether you are in a 'safe' place.
car theft
The first, and you probably think the most logical solution to prevent car theft, is to always lock your door properly. The same applies to the home or hotel where you are staying. It is best to never leave anything in your car. When you rent a car on the island, in some cases you get a steering wheel lock. Always put these on your handlebars! It may feel excessive to do this in a supermarket parking lot but 'better safe than sorry'! Never park your car in a remote place.
Helpful Hint: To show that there is nothing in your car, you can leave the glove compartment open. This way, potential thieves may think it's not worth breaking into.
Beach
On Curaçao you will of course spend a day there beach. It is good to know that most tourist beaches have a security guard walking around. However, it is also important at these beaches that you pay close attention to your belongings and lock your car!
