Kaya Kaya festival started as a small street party and has now grown into one of the largest festivals in Curaçao. Kaya means 'street' in Papiamentu which is very appropriate for the location. A few streets in the Otrobanda district will be closed off for the festival. Annually, the festival attracts thousands of visitors and locals gather with visitors on the island to enjoy art, music and delicious food.
Art at Kaya Kaya festival
A big part of the Kaya Kaya festival are the works of art. These include paintings and murals. There are many works of art created by local artists to admire and can be found in the streets of the festival. The goal of Kaya Kaya is to renovate the neighborhood and show the charms of Otrobanda. Origin of Kaya Kaya
Before Kaya Kaya was the festival as we know it today, it started with a street party. There were not many visitors and it was not organized. The party turned out to be so fun and cozy that the founders of the current festival have expanded the party further. The first official edition was in 2018.
